How it works

  1. Open MenuDesign in the browser on your phone, tablet or computer.
  2. Take a photo of your current menu, pick one from your gallery or paste the text if you have it in a document.
  3. Check what it has read: sections, dishes, descriptions and prices.
  4. Mark allergens and labels: vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, spicy, recommended…
  5. Choose a design and a format: 50 designs, plus paper and screen formats.
  6. Export as PDF, PNG or JPG, or print straight away.

Every change saves itself. Open the app tomorrow and your menu is still there.

Tips for a photo that reads well

Text recognition works better the better the photo:

  • Take the sheet out of its sleeve. Plastic reflects light and hides letters.
  • Good light, no shadows. Next to a window is ideal; avoid the flash.
  • Flat, straight page, with the phone held parallel to the paper.
  • One page per photo, whole and in focus.
  • Check the prices afterwards: a 0 read as an O, or a decimal point that goes missing, are the most common slips.

If your current menu is handwritten or on a chalkboard, it can be harder. In that case it’s sometimes quicker to type or dictate it into a note on your phone and paste the text.

Or paste the text

If your menu lives in a document, an email, a message or your website, copy the text and paste it in. It helps if each dish is on its own line with the price at the end, and section headings sit on a line of their own. Anything that isn’t read correctly, you fix in the editor.

Privacy: your menu never leaves your device

MenuDesign is built so you don’t have to trust anyone with your data:

  • Text recognition (OCR) runs on your device. The photo isn’t sent to any server.
  • The menu is saved in your browser, not in an account.
  • No sign-up: we don’t ask for an email address or a password.

Make a backup

Saving in the browser has a downside: if you clear your browsing data, change phone or use another browser, the menu won’t be there. So:

  • Download the backup (JSON) whenever you make important changes.
  • Keep it in your email, in cloud storage or on a USB stick.
  • To work on another device, import that file and you’ll have the menu exactly as it was.

What you can do next

Once the menu exists, everything else comes from the same content:

  • Translate it into Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Catalan, or make it bilingual.
  • Download the allergen matrix as an A4 sheet with space for a date and signature.
  • Create a daily or set lunch menu, with the date filled in automatically and dishes that autocomplete.
  • Export images for social media (4:5 post, 9:16 story) or for the TV in your venue (16:9).
  • Change format: A4, slim A4, A5, A3, US Letter, booklet or tri-fold.

Everything available from the first minute

Every design, format and feature is available as soon as you open the page, with no account or sign-up. Make, save and download as many menus as you need. Start in the editor.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install anything or create an account?

No. MenuDesign works in the browser on your phone, tablet or computer. There's no sign-up and no password.

Is my menu or my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The text in your photo is recognised on your own device and the menu is saved in your browser. Nobody else has a copy.

What happens if I change phone or clear my browser data?

Because the menu is only saved in your browser, it would be lost. Download the backup file (a JSON file) every now and then and you can restore it or open it on another device.

Is it really free?

Yes. Every design, format, allergen feature, translation and export is free, and you don't need to sign up.
